Tasting Notes

Every vintage of SP68 from Arianna Occhipinti has feeling, has life and even a pulse. It speaks of the Sicilian terroir the way a Sicilian speaks about life - animated. Nero d'Avola and Frappato combine to produce a plump fruited and dried herb mix of flavour coupled with fleshiness and zippy acidity on the palate. Don't get caught up in the descriptors, you'll miss the point and the feeling. Please understand that this wine can contain a slight spritz at times due to it's carbonic fermentation whereby CO2 exists in higher levels in the finished wine. Decanting, a little shake and patience will diminish the spritz. - Chris L

Based in Vittoria, Sicily, Arianna has been making wines since she was 16, alongside her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti (the 'O' of COS wines). She released her first commercially available wine under her own Occhipinti label at the age of 22.

Since then she has gone from strength to strength, focusing on the two Sicilian varieties, Nero d’Avola and Frappato – though she does make white wine too.

Arianna farms organically and biodynamically, rejecting the use of chemical sprays and fertilizers, as well as taking a minimal intervention approach in the winery. Long macerations, no additions, neutral fermentation vessels and very limited use of sulphur, allow Arianna to express the purity of Vittoria through her elegant Nero d’Avola and Frappato wines. They are simply wonderful expressions of both grape and terroir.
